Tetra
Pak
In
the 1930s, while searching for a new type of packaging that
“saves more than it costs“, the Swedish scientist Dr. Ruben Rausing
developed a new, hygienic berverage package with low raw material
requirements. This invention marked the birth of the present-day
multinational Tetra Pak Company.
The
German Tetra Pak Group was founded in 1955. In Germany, Tetra Pak
has two production facilities in Limburg and Berlin, and it is headquartered
in Hochheim. The company employs 745 staff and realized sales of
around EUR 701 million in 2003. It sold a total of 7.852 billion
beverage cartons.
Before
the beverage cartons containing milk, fruit juice or water arrive
on the shelves of retail outlets, they pass through a several-stage
production process. First of all, the raw paper, which is imported
from Scandinavia, is printed at the Tetra Pak production facilities.
After printing, a coating of polyethylene and aluminum is applied
to protect the content by blocking out light and oxygen. Filling
is realized by Tetra Pak's customers in the dairy and fruit juice
industries. They seal and form the cartons during the filling process
using Tetra Pak filling systems.
